Postmortem -- general comments

These are just general comments on your common tests. I'll get you more detailed notes next week.

I'm glad to say that no one seriously misread the extract. We had some very literal interpretations from one or two people, but most of you managed to get the main ideas on what the piece is about. Just that some of you didn't manage to articulate your ideas very well.

You need to link thematic concerns with stylistic/technical features. Most of you fall into these two camps: 1) thematic concerns, but weak on technical features, or explaining the why and how the passage communicates the particular theme; 2) strong on technical features but no thematic concerns (think...why are these features there?)

I'm giving you guys a piece for week 6 to work on.
